How To Properly

Surrender a Pet

Appointments must be made for all pet surrender requests. Due to limited space, we are unable to accept walk-ins.

Surrender Requests

At Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, we strive to provide compassion and understanding to owners considering surrendering their pets. If you have exhausted all options to rehome your pet, please complete the form below to inquire about surrendering. The surrender fee is $500 per pet. If your pet has bitten or broken skin in the last six months, please include this information in your submission.

Due to our limited space and resources, placement is not guaranteed. We receive a high volume of surrender requests and do our best to respond to all inquiries. However, it may take up to 3-4 weeks to hear back from us. Please wait for our response before bringing your pet to the shelter. Arriving without an appointment can cause unnecessary stress for your pet and may impact their chances of being placed.

Turning in a Stray

Our shelter is often at capacity, especially during summer months. If you find a healthy, thriving stray cat, leaving them in the community may be their best option. For stray dogs, please contact your local animal control office for guidance.

Surrender Prevention Options

We aim to empower pet owners to explore all alternatives before surrendering. Not all pets are suited for shelter placement. We encourage you to consider private rehoming or other support options as alternatives.

Placement Options

As the pet’s owner, you are in the best position to find them a new home. Before applying for surrender, consider using rehoming platforms like Home to Home to find a new family for your pet.

If you have an emergency, have found a stray cat or kitten or you need to surrender a dog immediately, please contact your local animal control for assistance.
