Dr. Sara Pizano is a veterinarian and Animal Welfare Strategist who founded Team Shelter USA and is considered a leading expert in shelter operations and assessments. Dr. Pizano’s approach is holistic and includes everything from public policy, community engagement, and intake procedures to the care of the shelter pets and live-saving programs.
Dr. Pizano has helped hundreds of shelters improve, work more efficiently and save more lives through her onsite assessments, national speaking engagements, and book, The Best Practice Playbook for Animal Shelters (available on Amazon). Among her many projects, Dr. Pizano oversees the assessment and mentorship program at the University of Florida’s Maddie’s Shelter Medicine program and serves as an advisor to several national programs including the Human Animal Support Services and the Million Cat Challenge.
